Reliability first, profit second. That’s the philosophy of the NCMPA1 Power Supply Team. They serve NCMPA1 communities 24-hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year. Their mission is to manage NCMPA1’s power generation to maximize return, but more importantly, keep the lights on for NCMPA1’s 163,000 retail customers.
The team keeps their eyes on the screen and the sky, and their finger on the pulse of national energy markets. They respond quickly to weather fluctuations and changing market conditions, shifting load from the Power Agency’s Catawba Nuclear Plant output, to the Monroe Generating Station, to the 34 units of distributed generation in NCMPA1 communities. The 24/7 on-call team constantly monitors the telemetry systems and dispatches load management to shave the transmission peak. And it’s all done seamlessly behind the scenes, without impact to customers.
The team is constantly adjusting the load forecast to make sure the Power Agency’s assets are managed optimally. And they are always checking after each other, monitoring to make sure every aspect is correct. They start out their day with the first daily forecast at 5:15 a.m. Then it’s tweaking, buying, selling and monitoring the rest of the day.
The personal touch yields superior results. This level of detail, professionalism and market experience brings benefits of about $30 million to NCMPA1 annually. These benefits are used to hold down NCMPA1 costs and minimize rate increases.
It’s a service that started in 2005 and is expected to continue to reap rewards well into the future.
