This is entry level professional law enforcement work involving patrolling an assigned area and working to prevent crime, conduct investigations, apprehend suspects and control traffic.
REQUIREMENTS: Must be a United States citizen, at least 20 years of age; of good moral character as determined by a background investigation; not have been convicted of a felony or a crime punishable by more than two year imprisonment or an offense involving moral turpitude; have high school diploma or GED; have a valid driver’s license; have corrected vision of 20/20; must reside within a fifty (50) mile radius of City Hall; ability to deal with the public tactfully and firmly; ability to pass the pre-employment POPAT (Police Officer Physical Abilities Test); a polygraph examination given by a licensed polygraph examiner, a psychological test, drug screen and medical examination.

STORMWATER ENGINEER (Engineering/Civil)

Professional work in planning, designing and reviewing the components of the City’s stormwater system and regulatory oversight of development projects for compliance with City regulations and standards relating to stormwater management, roadway construction and erosion control.  Work involves directing, leading and managing employees within the Civil Administration Division; evaluating development plans for compliance with City and State stormwater and erosion control requirements;  supervising the Construction Inspectors; preparing hydraulic analysis and other engineering studies to evaluate alternatives and making recommendations for future stormwater capital improvement needs; analyzing construction cost estimates, proposals, quotations and bids for City projects; designing work such as preparation and oversight of engineering drawings, data research, computations and cost estimates; preparing specifications and technical reports and schedules for City projects.
REQUIREMENTS:  Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university; EI certificate and one year of experience in the practice of civil engineering; possession of a valid driver’s license.

MAINTENANCE WORKER I (Parks & Recreation/Cemetery)

DIRECTOR OF POWER & LIGHT

The City of Danville, Virginia Utilities Department is actively recruiting a Director of its Power & Light Division.  The Power & Light Director manages the overall operations of the City's electric system that serves approximately 42,000 homes and businesses from 18 substations in a 500-square mile service territory covering all of Danville and portions of a tri-county area.  The system peaks at 231,000 megawatts and delivers 1 billion kilowatt hours annually.  Danville Utilities owns a small 11 MW hydroelectric facility and is in the process of purchasing XXX MW of generation capacity in various plants owned by American Municipal Power-Ohio. The balance of power distributed is purchased through AMP-Ohio on the wholesale market.  The Power & Light Division also maintains an advanced fiber optic broadband telecommunications network. The Director supervises approximately 75 staff members responsible for generation, distribution, construction & maintenance, substation operations and maintenance, engineering, meter servicing, and telecommunications. Strong management skills required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant City Manager for Utilities. Education and experience combined to be equivalent to a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field and 5 to 10 years in energy utilities with considerable supervisory experience.  Possession of or ability to obtain Certification as a Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Salary range:  $70,000 – $95,000. The position will remain open until filled.

METER SUPERVISOR

Position available for responsible person to plan, supervise and direct personnel and field operations in the reading, testing, repair and maintenance of electric, water and gas meters of the Meter Section in the Electric Department.  Person will also be responsible for special metering projects including test pilot and AMR projects, communicating with commercial and industrial key accounts customers in calculating pulse values and the installation of load management devices and programming and software development and management for electric, water and gas meters.  Salary Range $46,904 - $70,283.

The successful candidate will have considerable progressive supervisory experience in metering services and a thorough knowledge of electricity as applied to metering applications.  An Associate’s Degree in the electrical or electronics field is preferred.  Additional requirements include possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license and excellent written and oral communication skills as well as proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.  Applications accepted until position is filled.

General Statement of Duties
Performs difficult technical and administrative work supervising the activities of the electrical distribution system.

Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class plans, organizes and supervises the work of the division and performs administrative tasks, and provides guidance to field services staff engaged in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the overhead and underground electric utility lines and equipment.  The employee works with the department director in planning and directing all work activities, including long and short range planning, budget development and administration, and personnel issues. Work involves determining priorities; assigning work to crews; inspecting work in the field; and overseeing maintenance and repair activities.  Work requires on call and standby availability. The employee is subject to work in both inside and outside environments, extreme temperatures and  exposure to hazards associated with electrical line work.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Works and Utilities Director and is evaluated based on conferences, review of records and reports, and observation.

Duties and Responsibilities


Essential Duties and Tasks

Plans the work of the division including investigating consumer needs and acquiring necessary equipment, materials, and supplies; investigates work needs and lays out work steps for crew.
Directs the work of the electrical distribution maintenance crews; plans work, sets priorities, and inspects work of crews and staff.
Coordinates electrical distribution activities with outside agencies including contractors and engineers on field projects, prepares and  monitors specifications for lines and line locations.
Oversees the use of division resources including the effective use of personnel, equipment and materials; projects budget needs; evaluates programs and investigates new efficiency methods; acquires necessary equipment, tools and materials to avoid work delays.
Directs safety and training programs for the division and ensures proper safety precautions.
Investigates citizens concerns and complaints; delegates and handles appropriately.
Performs the hiring, employee training, coaching and evaluation of division staff; works with higher administration on discipline and other similar issues.
Researches and reports on various activities, budget needs, equipment and other projects requested by department director.
Coordinates work with other departments and contractors.
Establishes and maintains a variety of records and reports as assigned.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform very light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Must possess visual acuity to inspect plans, designs, and written reports; prepare figures and data;  use measurement devices; and operate various equipment, computers, and motor vehicles.

Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from college with a major in electrical engineering or technology and considerable experience in an electrical utility including some field work experience at the level of a supervisor or crew leader; or graduation from high school and extensive experience in progressively responsible electric line technician positions supplemented by training in computer and engineering skills, including experience at a supervisory level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirement
Valid NC Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
