Rocky Mount Mayor Fred Turnage Honored with
Public Power Lifetime Achievement Award
Raleigh, NC, August 27, 2007 – Frederick
E. Turnage, longtime Mayor of Rocky Mount, recently received the
Public Power Lifetime Achievement Award from ElectriCities of North
Carolina, Inc. The award was presented to Mayor Turnage on August
10 during ElectriCities’ Annual Meeting in Asheville.
Mayor Turnage has a long history of serving not only the City of
Rocky Mount, but many other state and national organizations. He
has served as Mayor of Rocky Mount since 1973 and has maintained
a private law practice in Rocky Mount since 1963. He served as the
President of the North Carolina League of Municipalities and on
the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities.
Mayor Turnage also has a long history of service to NC Public Power.
He served as Rocky Mount’s representative on the North Carolina
Eastern Municipal Power Agency Board of Commissioners since its
organization meeting in December 1976 until July 2004. He served
as the Board Chairman of that group from 1983 until 2003.
Mayor Turnage served on the former ElectriCities Board of Directors
from 1976 until 1981 and from 1985 until 1995. He served as the
Board President from 1979 until 1980. He also serves on the present-day
ElectriCities Board of Directors, beginning his first term in December
2003. Upon the death of Mack Green, Fred completed that term as
Board Chairman, serving from April 2004 until January 2005.
“Mayor Turnage has led by example through class, dignity,
and with the utmost professionalism,” said Jerry Cox, ElectriCities
Board Member and Chairman of the Awards Committee, upon presenting
the award. “His leadership as Mayor has not only benefited
public power in his home town, but Eastern North Carolina and the
State of North Carolina, as well. He is a most deserving recipient
of the Lifetime Achievement Award and I am honored to present this
award to him."
The Public Power Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individual
contributions throughout a lifetime to local systems, NC public
power and public power nationwide. The award is given based on leadership,
public power service, innovation and creativity and longevity of
service to public power. Past recipients of the award are Malcolm
A. “Mack” Green from Greenville and Jack F. Neel from
Albemarle.
