In Lincolnton, N.C., the 1.6 mile Marcia H. Cloninger Rail-Trail offers a chance for walkers, joggers, bikers, and parents pushing baby strollers to explore the heart of this small Southern town. The trail is highlighted by a stately courthouse, model Main St., thriving arts scene, and nearby lakes and mountains. The trail begins near Liberty Street and travels past the old railroad depot at Pine and North Poplar streets. Expect to encounter both locals and visitors out for exercise or on a break from the specialty and antique shops. It is part of the growing Carolina Thread Trail, a trail network that stretches across the Carolinas, connecting people to places, and communities to each other.
