Job Summary
The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical distribution system equipment. Success in this position provides for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of electric utilities. The work consists of related technical duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical distribution equipment. Work performed in inclement weather and with high voltage contributes to the complexity of the position.
Primary Responsibilities
Major Duties
- Assists others in the installation, repair, operation, and maintenance of the electric distribution system while de-energized.
- Climbs utility poles to install hardware, fuses, and transformers.
- Maintains existing high and low voltage lines.
- Performs switching and grounding of distribution lines.
- Installs and removes cross arms, lighting arresters, primary and secondary lines, and span guys.
- Operates a bucket truck and digger derrick.
- Sets and pulls poles; installs anchors.
- Performs regular inspections and maintenance of equipment.
- Pulls wire to install electric utility distribution system.
- Installs underground utility services.
- Maintains and repairs substation equipment.
- Responds to after-hours emergency calls.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Guidelines
Guidelines include town ordinances, policies, and procedures, relevant federal and state laws and regulations, the National Electric Safety Code, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
Job Requirements
Education/Experience Requirements
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school
education. - Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having
had a similar position for one to two years. - Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Must have CDL (Commercial Driver’s License).
Knowledge Requirements
- Knowledge of equipment, materials, principles, and practices used in installation, repair, and maintenance of electric utilities.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to electric utilities.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and guidelines.
- Skill in use of electric hot line tools and equipment.
- Skill in climbing utility poles and repairing elevated distribution equipment.
- Skill in the operation of a bucket truck and digger derrick.
- Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
- Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
