Job Summary
Performs difficult technical work in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical power distribution systems. Employees in this class perform highly skilled technical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical lines. Employees are expected to possess a high degree of knowledge of standardized techniques and practices utilized in power line construction, maintenance and repair. Judgement is utilized by determining the most appropriate work methods and observing safety standards. Work requires frequent on-call and call-back responsibilities. The employee is subject to hazards associated with electrical work. Work is usually performed under on-site supervision of an Electric Power Line Crew Supervisor and is reviewed in progress and upon completion for conformance to accepted standards. The work of the Electric Power Line Technician III is distinguished from the work of other Power Line Technicians in that work is performed more independently, may have crew leader responsibilities and work is performed at the highest skill level. An employee in this class may, at times, be expected to take over for the Crew Supervisor in his absence.
Primary Responsibilities
- Installs/Maintains/Repairs underground and overhead facilities, cables, transformers, cabinets and conduit.
- Performs substation maintenance and operation.
- Operates machinery such as backhoes, trenchers, tamps, line truck, bucket truck, etc.
- Troubleshoots underground and overhead line problems.
- Locates underground lines.
- Assists crew with boring unit.
- Installs street lights.
- Answers questions from the public and others regarding line installation and repair.
- Participates in tree trimming, chipping and clean up as needed.
- Provides guidance and training to lower level Power Line Technicians.
- May serve in the absence of the Crew Supervisor.
- Performs related duties as required.
Job Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the standard techniques and practices used in power line construction and maintenance work.
- Considerable knowledge of the use and care of all tools, equipment and supplies used in power distribution work.
- Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in power line work.
- Ability to climb poles and work efficiently and safely.
- Ability to work on high voltage lines independently and to take precautionary measures to avoid accidents.
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
- Ability to use line worker’s tools and equipment in a safe manner.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally; in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently; and in excess of 20 pounds constantly.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate a variety of vehicles and equipment and inspect and assemble small parts.
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school with extensive experience in electrical distribution systems as a lineman.
