Job Summary

This position is responsible for performing technical work assisting in the construction, maintenance, repair, and operation of electric transmission and distribution lines.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assembles and attaches crossarms and guy wires.
  • Installs distribution transformers and associated devices.
  • Replaces old service lines.
  • Installs meters.
  • Raises and sets poles.
  • Hangs transformers and streetlights.
  • Operates a line and aerial bucket truck.
  • Operates an excavator, trencher, and plow backhoe.
  • Trims trees and picks up limbs and debris.
  • Installs temporary services for new houses and businesses.
  • Maintains traffic signals, security lights, and streetlights.
  • Performs switching and tagging operations on lines.
  • Climbs poles and strings secondary and primary wires.
  • Loads and unloads materials on work truck.
  • Participates in the Lineman Career Development Program.
  • Sets up safe work zones and flags traffic.
  • Prepares materials and supplies for top linemen.
  • Troubleshoots overhead and underground electric outages.
  • Locates and repairs underground wires using specialized equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina CDL Class A or Class B license.
  • Live within a 45-minute response time of Statesville, NC.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in electrical construction and maintenance work as well as underground wire/transformer installation
  • Knowledge of the principles of electricity as applied to power circuits, wiring diagrams, and plant operations.
  • Knowledge of the operation of aerial devices such as a Bucket Truck.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions related to electrical work.
  • Knowledge of required OSHA training for Confined Space, Trenching & Shoring, CPR/First Aid, and Flagger practices, equipment, and regulations (Training provided by the City of Statesville).
  • Ability to perform manual work under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb poles, operate machinery, tools, and equipment used in electrical work.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and the public.
