Five Ways to Stay Prepared for Hurricane Season

read

Atlantic hurricane season kicks off June 1 and lasts through Nov. 30 each year. If a hurricane impacts public power communities and causes outages, rest assured that our experienced, locally based electric crews are prepared to respond and restore power quickly and safely.

Public power communities in North Carolina keep the power flowing 99.99% of the time. When an outage does occur, it lasts, on average, less than half as long as those of other power providers.

With your community ready, it’s also important to prepare yourself and your household. Here are five tips.

  1. Gather emergency supplies, including medications, nonperishable food, bottled water, flashlights, battery-operated radios, and batteries. Keep them in a dry place where they will be easy to find if the power goes out. Remember to gather supplies for your pets too.
  2. Keep your mobile phone charged. You can also keep portable chargers and make sure each has a full battery.
  3. Monitor official weather bulletins. Hurricanes can be unpredictable, so stay up to date with the latest forecasts from trusted sources like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
  4. If a storm is forecast to hit your community, move yard items and furniture inside. These can take flight in heavy winds and hurt someone or damage property.
  5. If you’re able, consider checking with your neighbors ahead of a storm to see if you can help them prepare.
